The South African Association for Social Workers in Private Practice (SAASWIPP) was founded in 1979 to co-ordinate and promote the activities of social workers in private practice, and to set and maintain professional standards.

It was subsequently constituted as a national association, and presently has seven well established and functioning provincial branches in Gauteng, Limpopo,Mpumalanga, Orange Free State, KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Facilitation of the establishment of branches in the remaining two provinces is in progress.

Since its inception, SAASWIPP has been an all-inclusive and non-racial association, and its membership has increased significantly over the years.
