Family Counselling Therapist, specialising in Emigration and Relocation.
Emigration is one of the most stressful life-changing endeavours for all role-players involved. Many South Africans have emigrated to destinations all over the world, often over multiple time zones. Migration is a complex psychological and socio-cultural phenomenon that has vast repercussions, not only for the emigrant, but also for those left behind that must deal with the aftermath of this phenomenon. Loss is experienced on multiple levels but this kind of loss, ambiguous loss, is often not acknowledged by society.
If home is where the heart is, what happens when families live in two different worlds? Migration need not sever the bond between loved ones. The challenge faced by transnational families is to preserve this special bond. As a registered health care professional in South Africa, I specialise in pre- and post-emigration counselling for the emigrant and those left behind (parents, siblings, and grandparents).
My Services Include:
Individual Therapy
Private counselling (in person or via Zoom sessions) is a personalised process, tailored to your needs. Being mindful of relationships, I believe that the right client-therapist fit is essential in the therapeutic process. It is important to feel as though your therapist has a deep understanding and knowledge base regarding the issues you would like to explore. I offer therapy mainly relating to ambiguous loss such as experienced during emigration, divorce and other types of losses that are not always acknowledged and understood by society or the general public.
Creating awareness
Informing the general public on the impact of ambiguous loss by means of lectures and workshops on especially the phenomenon of South African emigration.
Continuous Research
I am passionately researching emigration, especially in the South African context and the effects thereof on intergenerational relationships in families. I share this knowledge via articles, conferences and workshops, to create awareness among the general public about this ever-increasing phenomenon.
